I thought of this pattern recently while reading the memoir of Pete Buttigieg, a 2020 presidential candidate and the mayor of South Bend, Ind. Perhaps its a research institute connected to a headquarters campus elsewhere. Or perhaps it involves selling an ambitious philanthropist on starting a new college. Higher education, after all, could benefit from new, innovative entrants.
